Conan On Cynicism

Please, do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record, it’s my least favorite quality. It doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you, it’s just true.

– Conan O’Brien

  • I was so happy that Conan was so positive in his final moments on the Tonight show. It shows true class, and cements him even further as one of my favourite writers.

There’s a difference between being cynical and being sarcastic. Conan’s style of self deprecating humour was always funny and sarcastic — never negative and cynical.

I hope that people really do follow his advice, since I can attest that it really does work. I’d add that being genuine helps a lot too, but Conan nailed it!

  • Absolutely agree with you guys. That speech made me tier up. Amazing words of inspiration from one of the most entertaining people in TV for the past 20 years. We’ll miss you Conan!

  • No truer words were ever said by any multi-millionaire former employee with $32M walking money in his pocket. Makes you kinda wonder what he would have really said had he not signed an agreement with that nondisparagement clause, and left without the cash.
Still, it’s sentimental enough that it kinda makes me tear up.

Warning: no cynicism was used in the writing of this post.

    • I have to disagree here. Take a look at Henry Rollins, Tool, Dawkins etc. There are many people who are sucsesfull and very cynical.
